Regenerativemedicineisapioneering?eldaimedatrestoringandregeneratingthefunctionofdamagedcells,organsandtissues inordertoestablishnormalfunction.Itdemandsthecrosscommunicationofdisciplinestodevelope?ectivetherapeuticstem cellbasedtherapies.Nanotechnologyhasbeeninstrumentalinthedevelopmentandtranslationofbasicresearchtotheclinically relevanttherapies.Inparticular,magneticnanoparticles(MNPs)havebeenappliedtotag,trackandactivatestemcellso?ering ane?ectivemeansofmonitoringinvitroandinvivobehaviour.MNPsarecomprisedofanironoxidecorewithabiocompatible biologicalpolymer.Safetyisanissueofconstantconcernandemphasisesontheimportanceofinvestigatingtheissueoftoxicity. Anyindicationoftoxicitycanultimatelylimitthetherapeutice?ciencyofthetherapy.Toxicityishighlydependentonthephysical, chemicalandstructuralpropertiesoftheMNPitselfaswellasdoseandintendeduse.Fewinvitrostudieshavereportedadverse e?ectsofMNPoncellsatinvitrointherapeuticdoses.However,longterminvivostudieshavenotbeenstudiedasextensively. Thisreviewaimstosummarisecurrentresearchinthistopichighlightingcommonlyusedtoxicityassaystoinvestigatethis. 1.Introduction [5].Examples include thetransplantationofmesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of Huntington’s disease [6]. This paper will focus speci?c
