Peritonealdialysis(PD)isapreferredhomedialysismodalityandhasanumberofaddedadvantagesincludingimprovedinitial patientsurvivalandcoste?ectivenessoverhaemodialysis.Despitethesebene?ts,uptakeofPDremainsrelativelylow,especially in developed countries. Wider implementation of PD is compromised by higher technique failure from infections (e.g., PD peritonitis)andultra?ltrationfailure.Theseareinevitableconsequencesofperitonealinjury,whichisthoughttoresultprimarily fromcontinuousexposuretoPD?uidsthatarecharacterisedbytheir“unphysiologic”composition.Inordertoovercomethese barriers,anumberofmorebiocompatiblePD?uids,withneutralpH,lowglucosedegradationproductcontent,andbicarbonate bu?erhavebeenmanufacturedoverthepasttwodecades.Severalpreclinicalstudieshavedemonstratedtheirbene?tintermsof improvementinhostcelldefence,peritonealmembraneintegrity,andcytokinepro?le.Thispaperaimstoreviewrandomised controlledtrialsassessingtheuseofbiocompatiblePD?uidsandtheire?ectonclinicaloutcomes. 1.Introduction products(GDPs),maycontributetotheseadverseoutcomes as demonstrated in in vitro and animal studies [6–9].
