OurobjectivewastoidentifytheassociationbetweenmaternaldietwithChineseherbalmedicinesandprolongedjaundiceof breast-fedinfants.Healthyinfantsat25to45daysofagewereeligibleforenrollmentintothisprospectivestudy.Jaundicewas de?ned as a transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) value ≥ 5mg/dL. A questionnaire survey asking feeding type, stool pattern, and maternaldietwasconductedatthetimeofTcBmeasurement.Atotalof1148infantswereenrolled,including151formula-fed,436 combination-fed,and561breast-fedinfants.Theincidencesofjaundicewere4.0%informula-fedinfants,15.1%incombination- fedinfants,and39.8%inbreast-fedinfants(P0.001).Inaddition,jaundicewasnotedin37.1%ofpreterminfantsand25.0% ofterminfants(P 0.001).Furthermore,jaundicewasmorecommoninbreast-fedinfantswhosemothersdidnotconsume thetraditionalChineseherbalmedicinesthaninbreast-fedinfantswhosemothersdidconsumesuchmedicines(P 0.001). Inconclusion,thiscohortstudyhasidenti?edlate-pretermbirthandbreastfeedingasthecontributoryfactorsforprolonged jaundiceofapparentlywellinfants.Thedataindica
