Anage-matchedcase-controlstudywasinitiatedtodeterminethemajorriskfactorsassociatedwithCKDincatsanddogsand todeterminewhatclinicalsignscatanddogownersobservedbeforetheirveterinariandiagnosedtheirpetwithCKD.When comparedtocontrols,thefelinecasesweremorelikelytohavehadpolydipsiaandpolyuriaintheyearbeforetheowners’catswere diagnosedwithCKD.Inthedogs,increasedwaterintake,increasedurination,smallsizeandarecenthistoryofweightlossandbad breathwerenoticedbythedogownersbeforeveterinaryCKDdiagnosis.Dogownersrecognizedabnormaldrinkingandurination behavioroverhalfayearbeforetheirpet’sveterinarydiagnosiswithCKD,andtheyrecognizedweightlossalmost4monthsbefore CKDdiagnosis.Badbreathwasnoticed1.2yearsbeforerecognitionofCKDbyaveterinarian.GiventhatearlierCKDdiagnosis shouldhavebeenpossibleinmostcases,clinicaltrialsshouldproceedtomeasurethee?cacyofearlyinterventions. 1.Introduction beenestablishedbytheInternationalRenalInterestSociety (IRIS),andthestageofrenaldiseaseisbelievedtobestrongly associatedwithpatientsurvivaltime[
