Syrianhamsters(Mesocricetusauratus)runextensivelyinexercisewheels.Thisrunningmaycausepawlesions.Threetreatments ofthesewounds(topicalapplicationofvitaminE,wheelblocking,andacombinationofboth)werecomparedusingbothsexes. Apretreatmentperiodwithorwithoutwheelslasted15daysandtheensuingtreatmentperiodlasted45days.Attheendofthe pre-treatmentperiod,noneoftheanimalswithoutwheelshadpawwounds,whereasatleast75%ofthefemalesand100%ofthe maleswithwheelsdid.Femaleshadfewerandsmallerwoundsthanmalesatthispoint.Attheendofthetreatmentperiod,no e?ectofvitaminEcouldbediscerned,butsigni?cantwoundhealingoccurredafterwheelblockinginbothmalesandfemales.
