Acomputationalprocedureforthemechanismofshear betweentheliquidsublayerandaircavityinthecavitation zoneofasubmergedjournalbearingispresentedhere.Using themassconservationprinciple,Elrod’suniversalequation is modi?ed to take into consideration the shear of the air cavityinthecavitationregion.Resultsofsteadystateand transient response for the submerged journal bearing us- ingthepresentapproacharecomparedwiththeuniversal equationbasedonthestriated?owinthecavitationregion. Atsteadystate,theangularextentofcavitationregionpre- dictedbythepresentapproachishigherthanthatpredicted byElrod’smodelandthelimitcyclejournaltransientre- sponse using the present approach predicts higher eccen- tricityratios.
