Gomez* DepartmentofOralSurgeryandPathology,UniversidadeFederaldeMinasGerais,BeloHorizonte,Brazil Immunologicalmechanismsparticipateinthepathogenesisofhumanchronicin?ammatoryperiodontaldisease(CIPD).Human + CD4 lymphocytesexpressfunctionallyheterogeneouspro?lesofcytokineproduction.CD26isanintegralmembraneglycoprotein, thatis,amarkerofTh1-likecytokinedevelopment.Thepurposeofthepresentstudywastocomparetheimmuno-expressionofCD26 receptorinperiodontalsiteswithandwithoutclinicalattachmentloss(CAL).Fivepatientswithrapidlyprogressingperiodontitis andonewithjuvenileperiodontitiswereinvestigated.EachpatientpresentedatleastonesitewithandwithoutCAL.Tensiteswith CALandninewithoutanyCALwerebiopsied,followedbytheimmunohistochemicalidenti?cationoftheCD26receptorusingthe MIB-DS2/7antibody.Theresultsdemonstratedthatthepercentageofpositivecellsforthisantigenintheperiodontalsiteswith CALwasnotsigni?cantlydifferentfromthosewithoutattachmentloss.Therefore,Th1cellimpairmentmaynotbedirectlyinvolved withperiodontalattachmentloss.
