(Tc =71.3 C)fortheliquidcrystalcompoundB5.Byexpandingthefreeenergyintermsoftheorderparameterinthemean ?eldtheory,theexpressionforthedielectricsusceptibility(dielectricconstant)isderivedandis?ttedtotheexperimentaldata forεwhichwasobtainedatthe?eldstrengthsof0and67kV/cmfromliterature.Coe?cientsinthefreeenergyexpansionare determinedfromour?tfortheSA-SBtransitionofB5.Ourresultsshowthattheobservedbehaviourofthedielectricconstantε closetotheSA-SBtransitioninB5canbedescribedsatisfactorilybyourmean?eldmodel. 1.Introduction Sometheoreticalmodelshavebeengivenintheliterature toexplainthetransitionsbetweenthesmecticphases.The mean ?eld models where the free energy is expanded in termsoftheorderparameterswiththecouplingterms,have beenusedtoanalyzetheexperimentaldata.Regardingthe Various smectic phases which occur in ferroelectric liquid crystalsareofinteresttostudyclosetothephasetransitions. In the smectic A phase, the long axes of the liquid crystal moleculesareparalleltothedirectorwhichisperpendicular spontaneous polarization P and the tilt angle θ, a bilinear couplin
