This study evaluated the e?ects of LT4 administration on the bone mineral density (BMD) in physiological postmenopausal womenaftertwoyearsofcontinuativetreatment.110postmenopausalwomenwithnodulargoiteragedbetween50and55years wereexaminedbeforeandafter2yearsoftherapywitha?xeddoseofLT4(1.6mcg/kg/die)forthetreatmentofnodularthyroid disease.TheresultsshowedthatthepatientsontreatmentwithLT4haveaslight,butsigni?cantreductionoftheBMDafter2years oftreatment,associatedwithincreasedserumlevelsofalkalinephosphataseandurinaryexcretionofhydroxyproline,con?rming ourdataconductedonthesamegroupafteroneyearoftherapy.ComparisonbetweenpatientsreceivingLT4(groupA)ornot (groupB)showedthatgroupApatientshadsigni?cantlylowerBMD.Wedemonstratedthestatisticallysigni?cantin?uenceofthe followingriskfactorsonBMD:(1)bodymassindex19kg/m ;(2)theonsetofmenarcheaftertheageof15years;(3)positive 2 historyforperiodofamenorrhoea;(4)nulliparity. 1.Introduction concerningthee?ectsofthetreatmentwithL-thyroxin(LT4) onBMD.Thyroidhormonescertainlydetermineanincrease of both osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities over both corticalandtrabecularbones[2,3].However,thedataabout therealimpactthatLT4therapyexertsonBMDofwom
