Methanolic extracts (MEs) of seven brown seaweeds occurring in the Indian coastal waters were screened for their cytotoxic andantioxidantpropertiesfollowingvariousassays.ThemethanolicextractsofseaweedsintheorderofDictyopterisaustralis SpatoglossumvariabileStoechospermummarginatumSpatoglossumaspermumshowedsigni?cantcytotoxicactivity.Averyhigh DPPHradicalscavengingactivitywasexhibitedbythemethanolicextractspreparedfromSt.marginatum,Padinatetrastromatica, DictyopterisdelicatulaandS.aspermum.ThetotalphenoliccontentoftheMEsvariedfrom13.19± 0.32to25.29± 0.445gallic acidequivalents(mgg?1 ofmethanolicextract).Thereducingpowerassayindicatedadosedependency,atconcentrationsof 0.1,0.5and1.0and2.0mgmL?1 ofMEsanddecreasedinthefollowingorder:ButylatedhydroxytolueneP.tetrastromatica D. delicatula S. aspermum S. variabile S. marginatum D. australis S. marginatum.
