There has been increased global interest in traditional medicine. Effortstomonitorandregulateherbaldrugsandtraditionalmedicineareunderway.Chinahasbeensuc- cessfulinpromotingitstherapieswithmoreresearchandscience-basedapproach,whileAyurvedastill needsmoreextensivescientificresearchandevidencebase.Thisreviewgivesanoverviewofbasicprin- ciplesandcommonalitiesofTIMandTCManddiscusseskeydeterminantsofsuccess,whichthesegreat traditionsneedtoaddresstocompeteinglobalmarkets. China has successfully promoted its own therapies over the globe with a science-based approach. Growing popularity of TCM can be evidenced by therapidincreaseinnumberoflicensedChinesemedicinepro- viders in the United States. The Chinese government has pledged to create several export-oriented TCM giants in the comingyears(6).Continuouseffortsinpromotionoftheindi- genoustherapiesbyChinahaveputTCMinacommendable position. Global acceptance of Ayurveda is gearing up and therehasbeenasteepriseinthedemandformedicinalplants from India (7).
