Later, with the development of + + monoclonal antibodies, it became possible to recognize, within the T-cells, functional populations: CD4 and CD8 . These populationswereusuallyreferredtoas“helper”and“suppressor”cells,respectively.Howeverseveralinvestigationswithinthe CD8cellsfailedtodetectatruesuppressoractivity.Thereforethetermsuppressorwasneglectedbecauseitgeneratedconfusion. Muchlater,truesuppressoractivitywasrecognizedinasubpopulationofCD4cellscharacterizedbyhighlevelsofCD25.Thenovel populationisusuallyreferredtoasTregulatorycells(Tregs)anditischaracterizedbytheexpressionofFoxP3.Theheterogeneity ofCD4cellswasfurtherexpandedbytherecentdescriptionofanovelsubpopulationcharacterizedbyproductionofIL-17.These cellsaregenerallyreferredtoasTH17.Theycontributetoregulatetheoverallimmuneresponsetogetherwithothercytokine- producingpopulations.TregandTH17cellsarerelatedbecausetheycouldderivefromacommonprogenitor,dependingonthe presenceofcertaincytokines.Thepurposeofthisreviewistosummarizerecent?ndingsoftheroleofthesenovelpopulationsin the?eldofhumangastroenterologicaldisease.
