Withthesechallengesinmind,we arepleasedtointroduceanewseries initiativebyPLoSGenetics.Inkeeping withthemissionstatementofour journaltopresentinterdisciplinary researchinthebroadestpossible context,wehavecommissionedaseries ofReviewandOpinionarticlesbound thematicallytoadiscretesetoftopics ofinherentcomplexity,aswellasbroad interest.Eachcomponentoftheseries willexamineafacetofthechosen problemandwehopethattheamalgam ofeachseries,whichwillbeavailable electronicallyasauni?edentity,will botheducatethenon-specialistaswell asprovideabalancedviewthatwill transmittoourreadershipan ALookattheSciencebehindtheGeneticsofAging (Image:photographkindlyprovidedbytheKeanefamily,PLoSBiology4[4]:e119) understandwhyorganismsage,which inturnmightoffercluesastohowone mightdecelerate,stop,orevenreverse thisprocess.Whenexaminingthe?eld ofagingresearch,wecanidentifythree majorspheres:cellularaging (senescence/quiescence),organismal aging,andage-relateddisorders.Inthis series,wewillfocusprimarilyofthe ?rsttwoareas,becausethestudyof age-relateddisordersdoesnot necessarilyinformthebasicquestions, namely:(a)whatarethebasic determinantsoflifespan,and(b)what arethefundamentalcellularand molecularmechanismsthatunderscore agingprocesses? obviousincaptivitywherenatural hazardisremov
