DoSynesthetesHaveaGeneralAdvantageinVisual SearchandEpisodicMemory?ACaseforGroupStudies NicolasRothen*,BeatMeier* DepartmentofPsychology,UniversityofBern,Bern,Switzerland Abstract Background:Somestudies,mostofthemcase-reports,suggestthatsynestheteshaveanadvantageinvisualsearchand episodicmemorytasks.Thegoalofthisstudywastoexaminethishypothesisinagroupstudy. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Inthepresentstudy,wetestedthirteengrapheme-colorsynesthetesandwecompared their performance on avisual search task anda memory testto an age-, handedness-, education-, andgender-matched controlgroup.Theresultsshowednosignificantgroupdifferences(allrelevantps..50).Forthevisualsearchtaskeffect sizes indicated a small advantage for synesthetes (Cohen’s d between .19 and .32). No such advantage was found for episodicmemory(Cohen’sd,.05). Conclusions/Significance: The results indicate that synesthesia per se does not seem to lead to a strong performance advantage.Rather,thesuperiorperformanceofsynesthetesobservedinsomecase-reportstudiesmaybeduetoindividual differences,toaselectionbiasortoastrategicuseofsynesthesiaasamnemonic.Inordertoestablishuniversaleffectsof synesthesiaoncognitionsingle-casestudiesmustbecomplementedbygroupstudies.
