Place assimilation (e.g., from coronal/n/tolabial/m/:rainbowR*raimbow)altersthesurfaceformofwords.Listeners’abilitytoperceptuallycompensate forsuchchangesseemstodependonthephonemiccontext,onwhethertheadjacentsegment(e.g.,the/b/in‘‘rainbow’’) invitestheparticularchange.Also,someassimilationsoccurfrequently(e.g.,/n/R/m/),othersarerare(e.g.,/m/R/n/).We investigated the effects of place assimilation, its contextual dependency, and its frequency on the strength of auditory evokedmismatchnegativity(MMN)responses,usingpseudowords.Resultsfrommagnetoencephalography(MEG)revealed thattheMMNwasmodulatedbothbythefrequencyandcontextualappropriatenessofassimilations.
