Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review to identify studies reporting diarrhea proportionate mortality for children1–59moofagepublished between1980and2009.Usingthepublishedproportionatemortality estimatesand countrylevelcovariatesweconstructedalogisticregressionmodeltoestimatecountryandregionallevelproportionate mortalityandestimateduncertaintyboundsusingMonte-Carlosimulations. Findings:Weidentifiedmorethan90verbalautopsystudiesfromaroundtheworldtocontributedatatoasingle-cause model. We estimated diarrhea proportionate mortality for 84 countries in 6 regions and found diarrhea to account for between10.0%ofdeathsintheAmericasto31.3%ofdeathsintheSouth-eastAsianregion. Discussion: Diarrhea remains aleading cause of death for children 1–59mo of age. Published literature can be used to createasingle-causemortalitydiseasemodeltoestimatemortalityforcountrieslackingvitalregistrationdata.
