Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Dataoninfluenza-likeillness(ILI),collectedthroughcross-sectionalnationwidetelephone surveysof1,000householdsinGreecerepeatedfor25consecutiveweeks,werecombinedwithdatafromH1N1virologic surveillancetoestimatetheincidenceandtheclinicalattackrate(CAR)ofinfluenzaA(H1N1).AlternativedefinitionsofILI (coughorsorethroatandfever.38uC[ILI-38]orfever37.1–38uC[ILI-37])wereusedtoestimatethenumberofsymptomatic infections.Theinfectionattackrate(IAR)wasapproximatedusingestimatesfrompublishedstudiesonthefrequencyoffever ininfectedindividuals.DataonH1N1morbidityandmortalitywereusedtoestimateICUadmissionandcasefatality(CFR) rates. The epidemic peaked on week 48/2009 with approximately 750–1,500 new cases/100,000 population per week, depending on ILI-38 or ILI-37 case definition, respectively. By week 6/2010, 7.1%–15.6% of the population in Greecewas estimatedtobesymptomaticallyinfectedwithH1N1.Children5–19yearsrepresentedthemostaffectedpopulationgroup (CAR:27%–54%),whereasindividualsolderthan64yearsweretheleastaffected(CAR:0.6%–2.2%).TheIAR(95%CI)ofinfluenza A(H1N1)wasestimatedtobe19.7%(13.3%,26.1%).Per1,000symptomaticcases,basedonILI-38casedefinition,416attended healthservices,108visitedhospitalemergencydepartmentsand15wereadmittedtohospitals.ICUadmissionrateandCFR were37and17.5per100,000symptomaticcasesor13.4and6.3per100,000infections,respectively.
