By employing a simple coevolutionary rule entailing only two crucial parameters, we find that differentselectioncriteriaforthenewinteractionpartnersaswellastheirnumbervitallyaffecttheoutcomeofthegame. Theresolutionofthesocialdilemmaismostprobableiftheselectionfavorsmoresuccessfulplayersandiftheirmaximally attainablenumberisrestricted. Whilethepreferentialselectionofthebest playerspromotescooperation irrespective of game parametrization, the optimal number of new interactions depends somewhat on the temptation to defect. Our findingsrevealthatthe‘‘makingofnewfriends’’maybeanimportantactivityforthesuccessfulevolutionofcooperation, butalsothatpartnersmustbeselectedcarefullyandtheirnumberlimited.
