Basal ganglia dysfunctions have long been associated with impairment in automatic motor control. In addition,akeyroleofthemedialfrontalcortexhasbeensuggestedbyadministratingasubliminalmaskedprimetasktoa patientwithasmalllesionrestrictedtothesupplementarymotorarea(SMA).Inthistask,invisiblemaskedarrowsstimuli werefollowedbyvisiblearrowtargetsforaleftorrighthandresponseatdifferentinterstimuliintervals(ISI),producinga traditionalfacilitationeffectforcompatibletrialsatshortISIandareversalinhibitoryeffectatlongerISI.Here,byusingfast event-relatedfMRIandaweightedparametricanalysis,weshowedBOLDrelatedactivitychangesinacortico-subcortical network,especiallyintheSMAandthestriatum,directlylinkedtotheindividualbehavioralpattern.Thisnewimagingresult corroboratespreviousworksonsubliminalprimingusinglesionalapproaches.Thisfindingimpliesthatoneoftherolesof theseregionswastosuppressapartiallyactivatedmovementbelowthethresholdofawareness.
