Methods:Across-sectionalsurveyofparentsofchildrenwithtype1diabeteswasadministeredatanacademicclinicanda diabeteseducationalevent. Results:Surveyresponseratewas36%.Of166participatingparents,76%wereawareofT1DCTs.Moreparentsreported willingnesstoenrollchildrenwithdiabetes(47%)thanunaffectedchildren(36%).Only18%recalledbeingaskedtoenroll their children, and of these, 60% agreed to enroll at least some of those times. Less than 30% were comfortable with placebos.Factorspredictingwillingnesstoenrollchildrenwithdiabetesincludedhealthcareprovidertrust,comfortwith consentbyproxy,lowfearofchildbeinga‘‘guineapig,’’andcomfortwithplacebo.Factorspredictingwillingnesstoenroll unaffected children were provider trust, comfort with consent by proxy, comfort with placebo, and perceived ease of understandingT1DCTinformation. Conclusions:ParentsreportmoderatewillingnesstoenrollchildreninT1DCTs.Willingnessisdiminishedbycommontrial methodologies.Althoughmostparentsrecalledreceivingtrial-relatedinformation,significantlyfewerrecalledbeingasked toparticipate.EffortstooptimizeeffectivecommunicationaroundidentifiedareasofparentalconcernmayincreaseT1DCT participation.
