Methods:Wesampledthenaresof299swineand20workersfromtwodifferentproductionsystemsinIowaandIllinois, comprisingapproximately87,000liveanimals.MRSAisolatesweretypedbypulsedfieldgelelectrophoresis(PFGE)using SmaIandEagIrestrictionenzymes,andbymultilocussequencetyping(MLST).PCRwasusedtodetermineSCCmectype andpresenceofthepvlgene. Results:Inthispilotstudy,overallMRSAprevalenceinswinewas49%(147/299)and45%(9/20)inworkers.Theprevalence ofMRSAcarriageamongproductionsystemA’sswinevariedbyage,rangingfrom36%(11/30)inadultswineto100%(60/ 60)ofanimalsaged9and12weeks.TheprevalenceamongproductionsystemA’sworkerswas64%(9/14).MRSAwasnot isolatedfromproductionsystemB’sswineorworkers.IsolatesexaminedwerenottypeablebyPFGEwhenSmaIwasused, but digestion with EagI revealed that the isolates were clonal and were not related to common human types in Iowa (USA100,USA300,andUSA400).MLSTdocumentedthattheisolateswereST398.
