Objective:Togiveanoverviewofsoft-tissuebasedmethodsforquantitativelongitudinalassessmentoffacialdimensionsin childrenuntilsixyearsofageandtoassessthereliabilityofthesemethodsinstudieswithgoodmethodologicalquality. DataSource:PubMed,EMBASE,CochraneLibrary,WebofScience,ScopusandCINAHLweresearched.Ahandsearchwas performedtocheckforadditionalrelevantstudies. StudySelection:Primarypublicationsonfacialgrowthandtreatmentoutcomesinchildrenyoungerthansixyearsofage wereincluded. DataExtraction:Independentdataextractionbytwoobservers.Aqualityassessmentinstrumentwasusedtodetermine the methodological quality. Methods, used in studies with good methodological quality, were assessed for reliability expressedasthemagnitudeofthemeasurementerrorandthecorrelationcoefficientbetweenrepeatedmeasurements. Results:Intotal,47studieswereincludeddescribing4methods:2Dx-raycephalometry;2Dphotography;anthropometry; 3Dimagingtechniques(surfacelaserscanning,stereophotogrammetryandconebeamcomputedtomography).Ingeneral themeasurementerrorwasbelow1mmand1uandcorrelationcoefficientsrangefrom0.65to1.0. Conclusion:Variousmethodshaveshowntobereliable.
