These new findings indicate that the adult human lung contains a multipotentprogenitorcellwhosedifferentiationpotentialisprimarilydictatedbythemicroenvironment.TheHBECsystem isnotonlyimportantinunderstandingmechanismsforspecificcelllineagedifferentiation,butalsoforexaminingchanges thatcorrelatewithhumanlungdiseasesincludinglungcancer.
