Temperatureinstrokepatientsishigherthanincontrols,andincreasesgraduallyinthefirst72hoursafterstroke.A positivecorrelationbetweentemperatureandstrokeseveritydeterminedbyNIHSSwasfoundat24and48hours,butnotat admissionor72hours.Inalogisticregressionmodel,hightemperaturewasassociatedwithpooroutcomeat24hours(OR2.05, 95% CI 1.59–2.64, p,0.0001) and 48 hours (OR 1.93, 95% CI 1.08–2.34, p=0.007), but not at admission or 72hours. Temperature increases in patients withstroke in the first 72hours, with the harmful effect of high temperature occurringinthefirst48hours.Theneuroprotectiveeffectoflowtemperatureoccurswithinthefirst24hoursfromstrokeonset.
