Methods:In2012,apopulation-basedsurveywasconductedbyphoneinSardinia(n=1,200).Afullystructured interviewwascarriedoutwhichbeganwiththepresentationofavignettedepictingadiagnosticallyunlabeled caseofdepression,withorwithoutprovisionofinformationaboutprecedingstressfullifeevents. Results:Ingeneral,ascomparedtothepeoplefromVienna,theSardinianpublicwasmuchlesspronetodefine depressivesymptomsasexpressionofmentalillnessandmorereluctanttorecommendprofessionalhelp. However,similartoVienna,respondentspresentedwithvignettescontaininginformationonlosseventswereless likelytodefinedepressivesymptomsasindicationofapsychiatricillness.Theywerealsolesswillingtorecommend professionalhelpandreliedmoreonself-helpandsupportbyfamilymembersandclosefriends. Conclusions:Wewereabletoreplicatetheresultofthepreviousstudythatthepublictendstoperceive depressivesymptomsdifferentlydependingonthecontextinwhichtheyoccur.Thisletsusconcludethatthe dividebetweenthepublic’sviewofwhatdepressionisandtheviewofDSM-IVisnotlimitedtoaparticularculture butseemstorepresentamoregeneralphenomenon.Inconsequence,onemightrethinkthediagnosticcriteriafor majordepressivedisorderinordertoreconcilebothviews.
