Methods:Acohortstudyof61,241womenwhobookedforantenatalcareanddeliveredinalargeurban maternityhospitalbetween2000and2007.Self-reportedalcoholconsumptionatthebookingvisitwascategorised aslow(0-5unitsperweek),moderate(6-20unitsperweek)andhigh(20unitsperweek). Results:Ofthe81%ofwomenwhoreportedalcoholconsumptionduringtheperi-conceptionalperiod,71% reportedlowintake,9.9%moderateintakeand0.2%highintake.Factorsassociatedwithmoderatealcohol consumptionincludedbeinginemploymentOR4.47(95%CI4.17to4.80),IrishnationalityOR16.5(95%CI14.9to 18.3),privatehealthcareOR5.83(95%CI5.38to6.31)andsmokingOR1.86(95%CI1.73to2.01).Factors associatedwithhighconsumptionincludedmaternalagelessthan25yearsOR2.70(95%CI1.86to3.91)andillicit druguseOR6.46(95%CI3.32to12.60).Highconsumptionwasassociatedwithverypretermbirth(32weeks gestation)evenaftercontrollingforsocio-demographicfactors,adjustedOR3.15(95%CI1.26-7.88).Onlythree casesofFetalAlcoholSyndromewererecorded(0.05per1000totalbirths),oneeachinthelow,moderateand highconsumptiongroups. Conclusions:PublicHealthcampaignsneedtoemphasisetheimportanceofperi-conceptionalhealthandpre- pregnancyplanning.FetalAlcoholSyndromeislikelytobeunder-reporteddespitethehighprevalenceofalcohol consumptioninthispopulation.
