However,thesebioplasticsarecurrentlyfarmoreexpensivethanpetrochemicalplastics.Manyresearchersare investigatingtheuseofinexpensivesubstratesderivedfromwastestreams.Wastefryingoilisabundantandcan beusedinPHAproductionwithoutfiltration. Cupriavidusnecator(formerlyknownasRalstoniaeutropha)isaversatileorganismfortheproductionofPHAs. Small-scalebatchfermentationstudieshavebeensetup,usingdifferentconcentrationsofpurevegetableoil, heatedvegetableoilandwastefryingoil.Theseoilsareallrapeseedoils. IthasbeenshownthatCupriavidusnecatorproducedthehomopolymerpolyhydroxybutyrate(PHB)fromthe rapeseedoils.TheachievedPHBconcentrationfromwastefryingoilwas1.2g/l,whichissimilartoaconcentration thatcanbeobtainedfromglucose.ThePHBharvestfrompureoilandheatedoilwas0.62g/land0.9g/l respectively.Afeedofwastefryingoilcouldthusachievemorebiopolymerthanpurevegetableoil.Whiletheuse ofawasteproductisbeneficialfromalife-cycleperspective,PHBisnottheonlyproductthatcanbemadefrom wasteoil.Thecollectionofwastefryingoilisbecomingmorewidespread,makingwasteoilagoodalternativeto purifiedoilorglucoseforPHBproduction.
