However,previousstudieshavebeenbasedonsmallsamplesandthereportedprevalenceandassociationswith typicalclinicalfeaturesvary.Thepurposeofthisstudywastocomparepulmonaryfunction(PF)inpatientswithAS andpopulationcontrols,andtostudyassociationsbetweenPFanddiseaserelatedvariables,cardio-respiratory fitnessanddemographicvariablesinpatientswithAS. Methods:Inacross-sectionalcontrolledstudy,147ASpatientsand121controlsunderwentexaminations, includingdemographicvariables,laboratory(C-reactiveprotein(CRP),erythrocytesedimentationrate(ESR))and clinicalmeasures(diseaseactivity(ASdiseaseactivityscore,ASDAS),physicalfunction(Bathankylosingspondylitis functionalindex,BASFI),spinalmobility(Bathankylosingspondylitismetrologyindex,BASMI),chestexpansion, cardio-respiratoryfitness(peakoxygenuptake,VO2peak)andpulmonaryfunctiontest(PFT)(spirometry)). CumulativeprobabilityplotswereusedtovisualizeassociationsbetweentheASDASandBASMIscoresandthe correspondingforcedvitalcapacity(FVC%,percentageofpredictedvaluecontrolledfortheinfluenceof confoundingfactors)scoreforeachpatient.UnivariateANCOVAswereperformedtoexploregroupdifferencesin PFadjustingforrelevantvariables,andamultipleregressionmodelwasusedtoestimatetheexplanatorypowerof independentvariables(demographic,diseaserelated,VO2peak)onrestrictiveventilatoryimpairment(FVC%).
