Methods:Thisqualitativestudyincludedformerprisoninmates(N=29)whowererecruitedwithintwomonths aftertheirrelease.Interviewersconductedin-person,semi-structuredinterviewswhichexploredparticipants’ experiencesandperceptions.Transcriptswereanalyzedutilizingateam-basedmethodofinductiveanalysis. Results:Thefollowingthemesemerged:1)Relapsetodrugsandalcoholoccurredinacontextofpoorsocial support,medicalco-morbidityandinadequateeconomicresources;2)formerinmatesexperiencedubiquitous exposuretodrugsintheirlivingenvironments;3)intentionaloverdosewasconsidered“awayout”given situationalstressors,andaccidentaloverdosewasperceivedasrelatedtodecreasedtolerance;and4)protective factorsincludedstructureddrugtreatmentprograms,spirituality/religion,community-basedresources(including self-helpgroups),andfamily. Conclusions:Formerinmatesreturntoenvironmentsthatstronglytriggerrelapsetodruguseandputthemat riskforoverdose.Interventionstopreventoverdoseafterreleasefromprisonmaybenefitfromincludingstructured treatmentwithgradualtransitiontothecommunity,enhancedprotectivefactors,andreductionsofenvironmental triggerstousedrugs.
