Participants:Wereaged.17and,65years,recent(within28days)stroke,abletospeakEnglishsufficientlytorespondto studyquestions,andabletoprovidewritteninformedconsent.Participantswithlanguageorcognitiveimpairmentwere eligible to participate if their proxy provided consent and completed assessments on the participants’ behalf. The main outcomemeasurewasreturntopaidworkduringthe12monthsfollowingstroke. Results:Of441consentedparticipants(averageage52years,68%male,83%withischemicstroke),218wereinpaidfull- timeand53inpaidpart-timeworkimmediatelybeforetheirstroke,ofwhom202(75%)returnedtopaidpart-orfull-time workwithin12months.Beingmale,femalewithoutaprioractivityrestrictingillness,younger,independentinactivitiesof daily living (ADL) at 28 days after stroke, and having private health insurance was associated with return to paid work, followingadjustmentforotherillnessesandahistoryofdepressionbeforestroke(Cstatistic0?81).Workstressandpost strokedepressionshowednosuchindependentassociation. Conclusions:GiventhatindependenceinADListhestrongestpredictorofreturntopaidworkwithin12monthsofstroke, thesedatareinforcetheimportanceofred
