We conducted a large nationwide cohort study of 420 095 persons whose first cellular telephonesubscriptionwasbetween1982and1995,whowerefollowedthrough2003forhospitalcontactsforadiagnosis ofaCNSdisorder.Standardizedhospitalizationratios(SHRs)werederivedbydividingthenumberofhospitalcontactsinthe cohortbythenumberexpectedintheDanishpopulation.TheSHRswereincreasedby10–20%formigraineandvertigo.No associationswereseenforamyotrophiclateralsclerosis,multiplesclerosisorepilepsyinwomen.SHRsdecreasedby30–40% wereobservedfordementia(Alzheimerdisease,vascularandotherdementia),Parkinsondiseaseandepilepsyamongmen. Inanalysesrestrictedtosubscribersof10yearsormore,theSHRsremainedsimilarlyincreasedformigraineandvertigoand similarlydecreasedforAlzheimerdiseaseandotherdementiaandepilepsy(inmen);theotherSHRswereclosetounity.In conclusion,theexcessesofmigraineandvertigoobservedinthisfirststudyoncellulartelephonesandCNSdiseasedeserve furtherattention.Aninterplayofahealthycohorteffectandreversedcausationbiasduetoprodromalsymptomsimpedes detectionofapossibleassociationwithdementiaandParkinsondisease.Identificationofthefactorsthatresultinahealthy cohortmightbeofinterestforelucidationoftheetiologyofthesediseases.
