Babuetal.JournalofOpthalmicInflammationandInfection2013,3:9 /content/3/1/9 ORIGINAL RESEARCH OpenAccess PerspectivesofQuantiferonTBGoldtestamong Indianpractitioners:asurvey KalpanaBabu1*,MariammaPhilips2andDoddaballapurKrishnaswamySubbakrishna2 Abstract Background:TheaimofthisstudyistodeterminethepreferencesandperspectivesregardingtheQuantiferonTB Goldtestforthediagnosisoftuberculosis(TB)inIndia.Asurveywasdistributedamong46uveitisspecialists, rheumatologists,andpulmonologistswithaminimumof2yearsexperienceinthemanagementoftuberculosis,in ordertorestricttherespondentstospecialistswhohaveusedthistestintheirpracticeinthediagnosisof tuberculosis.Topicsincludeddemographics,usage,logistics,effectiveness,andpreferencesrelatedtothe QuantiferonTBGoldtest. Results:Amongthe37responders,therewere19uveitisspecialists,9rheumatologists,and9pulmonologistswith themajorityhavingmorethan7yearsofexperienceintreatingtuberculosis.LatentTBwasthemostcommontype oftuberculosisreportedby81%oftheresponders.Although92%agreethatQuantiferonTBGoldassayisusedfor thediagnosisoflatentTB,only32%usethistestalwaysintheirpractice.Limitingfactorsincludethehighercost (35.14%),limiteddatafromcountriesendemicforTBandhencelimitedinterpretationofresults(32.43%),the inabilitytodifferentiateactiveandlatentTB(32.43%),andtechnicalissuesrelatedtothetest(18.92%).A combinationoftheMantouxtestandQuantiferonTBGoldtestwasthepreferredtestforinvestigationin51%of therespondersratherthansolotests. Conclusions:Withinthisgroupofspecialistsdealingwithdifferentformsoftuberculosis,perspectivesofthistest andpreferencesaremany.TheincreasedcostandlimiteddatafromIndiawithrespecttointerpretationofthe resultsarethemostcommonlimitingfactorsinusingthistest.
