Wardleetal.ChiropracticManualTherapies2013,21:5 /content/21/1/5 CHIROPRACTIC MANUAL THERAPIES RESEARCH OpenAccess Referralstochiropractorsandosteopaths:a surveyofgeneralpractitionersinruraland regionalNewSouthWales,Australia JonLWardle1,2*,DaviWSibbritt1,2andJonAdams1,2 Abstract Background:Chiropracticandosteopathyformasignificantpartofthehealthcaresettinginruralandregional Australia,withnationalregistrationofpractitioners,publicsubsidiesforservicesandhighutilisationbythe Australianpublic.However,despitetheirsignificantroleinruralandregionalAustralia,therehasbeenlittle explorationoftheinterfacebetweenchiropracticandosteopathyandconventionalprimaryhealthcare practitionersinthisarea.Thestudyaimwastoexaminethereferralpracticesandfactorsthatunderliereferralto chiropractorsandosteopathsbyruralandregionalAustraliangeneralpractitioners(GPs),bydrawingonasampleof GPsinruralandregionalNewSouthWales. Methods:A27-itemquestionnairewassenttoall1486GPscurrentlypractisinginruralandregionalDivisionsof GeneralPracticeinNewSouthWales,Australia. Results:Atotalof585GPsrespondedtothequestionnaire,with49questionnairesreturnedas“nolongeratthis address”(responserate:40.7%).ThemajorityofGPs(64.1%)referredtoachiropractororosteopathatleastafew timesperyearwhile21.7%statedthattheywouldnotrefertoachiropractororosteopathunderany circumstances.PatientsaskingtheGPaboutCAM(OR=3.59;CI:1.12,11.55),GP’suseofCAMpractitionersasamajor sourceofinformation(OR=4.39;95%CI:2.04,9.41),lackofothertreatmentoptions(OR=2.41;95%CI:1.18,5.12), accesstoawidevarietyofmedicalspecialists(OR=12.5;95%CI:2.4,50.0),GP’sbeliefintheefficacyofchiropractic andosteopathyservices(OR=3.39;95%CI:2.19,5.25)andexperiencingpositiveresultsfrompatientsusingthese servicespreviously(OR=1.67;CI:1.02,2.75)wereallindependentlypredictiveofincreasedreferraltochiropractic andosteopathyservicesamongsttheruralGPs. Conclusions:ThereisasignificantinterfacebetweenchiropracticandosteopathyandAustralianruralandregional generalpracticeinNewSouthWale
