Methods:Patients(n=104)of7.61monthsmeandurationofinflammatoryarthritiscompletedself-report questionnairesonsociodemographics,diseasecharacteristicsandroleoverload.PainwasassessedusingtheShort FormMcGillPainQuestionnaire(MPQ)andphysicalfunctioningwasmeasuredwiththeMedicalOutcomesStudy ShortForm36(SF-36)physicalfunctioningscore.RoleoverloadwasmeasuredbytheRoleOverloadScale.Patients indicatedthenumberofsocialrolestheyoccupiedfromatotalofthethreetypicalroles;marital,parentalandpaid work. Results:Participants’meanagewas56yearsand70.2%werefemale.Roleoverloadwasnotcorrelatedtothe numberofsocialroles,however,itwaspositivelyassociatedwithpain(p=0.004)andnegativelyassociatedwith physicalfunctioning(p=0.001).Onmultivariateanalysis,roleoverloadwasnegativelyassociatedwithphysical functioningaftercontrollingfortherelevantsociodemographicvariables. Conclusion:Thisstudyidentifiesapossiblereciprocalrelationshipbetweenroleoverloadandphysicalfunctioning inpatientswithEIA.
