Received:17December2011;inrevisedform:27January2012/Accepted:7February2012/ Published:10February2012 Abstract:Methodologiesandalgorithmsarepresentedforthesecurecooperationofateam ofautonomousmobileunderwatersensors,connectedthroughanacousticcommunication network,withinsurveillanceandpatrollingapplications. Inparticular,theworkproposesa cooperative algorithm in which the mobile underwater sensors (installed on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles—AUVs) respond to simple local rules based on the available informationtoperformthemissionandmaintainthecommunicationlinkwiththenetwork (behavioralapproach). Thealgorithmisintrinsicallyrobust: withlossofcommunication amongthevehiclesthecoverageperformance(i.e.,themissiongoal)isdegradedbutnotlost. TheensuingformofgracefuldegradationprovidesalsoareactivemeasureagainstDenialof Service.Thecooperativealgorithmreliesonthefactthattheavailableinformationfromthe othersensors,thoughnotnecessarilycomplete,istrustworthy.
