美国社会与文化 IS US ELECTION DEMOCRATIC? QUESTION: IS US ELECTON DEMOCRATIC? Many people in America usually say US is the most democratic country in the whole world, and they propagandize that enthusiastically. This includes the ELECTION, which has been being advertised all over the world. However, some people disagree. They argue that the US Election does not follow the most common majority rule: the minority is subordinate to the majority, so that it is not as democratically as what is believed. The main process for the election is to be named as a Party’s nomination, then to be the major party’s candidate, and then to launch a full campaign to advertise their political goals and to courage the public to vote for him, and finally at the election day the electorate will vote for the one they choose. The process seems public and transparent, however the rules of the Election College makes it questionable. Since about half the states have already had the public tendency, only several states are the “battlefield”, which means that only the votes from those states can determinate the outcome of the election. Also, The state-by-state electoral process that America uses to select its president has led to a situation where only about a dozen states are relevant. This certainly does not mean the elected president is the choice of the majority, which indicates that the election is not democratic. But does it needs changes? The public opinion has long ago made it clear that something should be done there, yet nothing has changed since the day the rules for the election were made. That is this election system can protect the powers of small states. Also, the minorities’ demands will not be ignored in this system, because they hold the ballots that may change the course of the election. So, compared the two arguments, I come to the conclusion that the US Election is not the fairest way to elect a national leader, but it is the most democratic way to elect one’s prisedent.
