Q: Some young adults want independence from their parents as soon as possible. Others prefer to
live with their families for a longer time. Which one do you think is better?
There has been long-lasting disagreements about the issue whether young adults should leave
their parents as soon as possible. With strong urge for freedom, some young people choose to
leave home after they go to college while on the other hand, the rest tend to remain at home for a
while, maybe for the sense of security. However, in today`s competitive world, the society requires
highly independent people who no longer rely on others. So from my perspective, independence
from parents is a better choice for young adults.
Firstly, independence will definitely improve one`s ability to cope with difficulties and thus
expedite the pace of growth, since isolation after leaving home will force young college or
graduated students to try to achieve goals on their own. When having no one to turn to, they have
to face the hardship bravely and make ends meet by themselves , an opportunity to learn how to
manage the resource of friends and knowledge. The famous Chinese reporter, Ms Chai Jing, once
told the life after she left her parents for the first time and came to Beijing. Previously she had
lived in her hometown with her parents who ,with strong social network and aptitude, had been
always helping her. But afterwards, having settled down in the big city alone, she got the chance to
change. She dropped off bad habits and learned the appropriate way to communicate with her boss
and even strangers to finish her work. Besides, she must know how to take care of herself because
there was no one to look after her if she got ill. She concluded that the experience after leaving her
parents immediately after graduation was very precious and meaningful to her. That part of life
helped her prepared for really tough life task
