Case 1
My secretary is going to make a rather complicated monthly report. For years I had thought the report was her routine work and always looked at it and said, well, send it out..
This time, I read carefully in front of her and praised her for her good integration work. I thanked her for the neat and complete content of the report.
I was very surprised at her reaction. Thank you, she said. Thats a great compliment.
I found that my coffee cup always filled up when I wanted to have coffee for a few days, and she became more friendly. I remember these in a few days, and I will continue to thank her for doing better.
Case two
After I started expressing my gratitude to the staff and allowing them to interact with me, the two directors who came to me only when I asked for them began to discuss some of the problems with me. They also offered some advice that they dared not to use in the past. I am sure that as long as I change my behavior, it will increase the productivity of my staff. The experiment, which began two weeks ago, has become part of my daily routine.
Case three
Our company deals in supermarkets. Every month I meet with my two operations managers and different store managers. When these meetings are held, I usually talk to the store managers for 30 minutes. Let them know whats going on, and what I expect of them.
This year has been a rather hard year for supermarkets, and our performance has been in the doldrums. Last week, I received the latest issue of the performance report, although the improvement is not very significant, but it has really improved.
So, at the beginning of the meeting, I congratulate 10 recent performance improvement manager. I applaud the increase in overall income and the cost of their improvements.
