Ernest Hemingway Background Information Brief Introduction to one of his books A Farewell To Arms The writing style of Hemingway Summary Background Information Hemingway was born in a wealthy suburb of Chicago. His father was a physician, fond of hunting and fishing, who took young Ernest with him on his trips. Hemingway’s style of living as an adult and the fact that his books abound in sports terms are partly traceable to his early life. During the Spanish Civil War, he went to Spain as a journalist, strongly against the fascist forces of Franco. Three years later, he published one of his best novels, For Whom the Bell Tolls. In 1952, he published his masterpiece The Old Man and the Sea. In 1954, he was awarded the highest prize a writer can receive, the Nobel Prize for Literature. Brief Introduction to A Farewell To Arms A Farewell to Arms was published in 1929. The novel is a tragic love story. Hemingway himself also ever said the novel to be his “Romeo and Juliet”.
