年六 量 不精 神 勵 料 更 兩 (1) 不 (2) 勞度 流 來 Performance Based Design Method in Civil Engineering Shang-Hsien Lai, Hsein-Tsung Chang Abstract Proformance Based Design Methoed (PBDM) yields the performance target be quantatitive and clear defined, it joins the traditional design code without confliction or exceeding. On the other hands, PBDM will encourage the multiple selections with new material, new technique and new method. Therefore, PBDM meets all the demands from three fileds: safety (regularation), function (user perpose) and economic (design methodology). In civil engineering, there are two strategies to promote PBDM: ( 1) modify the traditional design and add PBDM to allow the alternative option and prevent rigid tabulated specification, (2) define the performance target to substitute the traditional prohibitive requirement. In the current civil engineering, several scopes which already adopted PBDM in years, such as structure seismic resisting engineering, fire safety system, seismic isolation device and bridge expansion joint. In this paper, the authers focus their study on PBDM details including performance target quantatitive method, performance-based design procedures, performance test and evaluation, future research and development.
