Opinions vary about this thought-provoking social phenomenon which is not uncommon in China now. With the Chinese Educational Panel Survey, this paper controls the factors of working in Beijing and employment types, takes “working in Beijing as the core variables, and analyzes its influences on job decision-making and salary especially for those graduates not born in Beijing. The study has found that these graduates who stay in Beijing are prone to work in foreign enterprises, not in state-owned enterprises and that although working in Beijing docs not have any effect on the starting salary, it does exercise a significant positive impact on the increase of salaries. At the school level, great differences exist between working in foreign and stateowned enterprises merely for graduates from regular universities; leaving Beijing would lead to a starting wage premium for graduates from elite universities, while working in Beijing could greatly accelerate the growth of wages for graduates from regular universities.
