Tu Youyou (屠呦呦) Chinese scientist Tu Youyou became the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize this October. Her discovery of artemisinin (青蒿素), a drug based on traditional Chinese herbal medicine, has helped to create an effective anti-malaria (抗疟疾的) medicine. Artemisinin has been chosen by the World Health Organization as an essential drug in the fight against malaria. It has saved tens of millions of lives around the world. ? Liu Cixin (刘慈欣) Chinese author Liu Cixin became the first Asian to win the Hugo Award (雨果奖) for best science fiction or fantasy novel this August. His most successful sci-fi works include The Three-Body Problem (《三体》). The book tells the story of a faraway civilization that invades earth in order to save itself from extinction. Over one million copies of The Three-Body Problem have been sold in the original Chinese. A movie adaptation of the novel is expected to hit screens in July 2016. ? Ning Zetao (宁泽涛) Competitive swimmer Ning Zetao, 22, became China’s first male sprint (短距离游泳) world champion this August as he took home the men’s 100-meter freestyle (自由泳) title at the 2015 FINA World Aquatics Championships (世界游泳锦标赛). With the great achievement, the young swimmer quickly became a popular figure across China’s social media.
