News Language Expressions ?1.?Features of Grammar Sentences News language is characterized by its simple and terse sentences, using minimum words to express maximum content. (1) Features of Grammar a. Use of noun phrase (NP) in preference to subordinate clause: e.g. No longer are the swimming peoples of Asia and Africa sunken, as for centuries past, in a passive acceptance of their lot. (The New York Times) Here, “in a passive acceptance of their lot” is preferred to “who accepted their lot”. b. Tense Accord is not necessarily observed. e.g. Paris announced that the General will visit Brazil as the guest of President Gonlart during the latter part of this year. (AP) Part I. News Writing (2) Features of Sentences Simple structures are often used instead of complex ones, such as relative clauses, appositive clauses, etc. a. Adj. are used as noun premodifiers: e.g. A quiet, tubercular physicist named Robert Goddard appeared before a board of military-weapons experts. ? A quiet physicist named Goddard who was---- or ----a physicist, a quiet and tubercular man named Goddard b. Noun modifiers are positioned before nouns rather than after nouns so as to omit unimportant words such as “the, of”. e.g. Michael Heseltine, the Secretary of Defense ? Defense Secretary Michael Heseltine Part I. News Writing c. Apostrophe “ ’ ” is used instead of “of” e.g. New York’s Senator Hillary Clinton (Time) d. of-phrase in substitution of clause e.g. Even the Soviet Union recently permitted mention in its press of a 15-year-old boy hammer-killing of an old woman in Moscow.
