News Writing (2) Features of Sentences Simple structures are often used instead of complex ones, such as relative clauses, appositive clauses, etc. a. Adj. are used as noun premodifiers: e.g. A quiet, tubercular physicist named Robert Goddard appeared before a board of military-weapons experts. ? A quiet physicist named Goddard who was---- or ----a physicist, a quiet and tubercular man named Goddard b. Noun modifiers are positioned before nouns rather than after nouns so as to omit unimportant words such as “the, of”. e.g. Michael Heseltine, the Secretary of Defense ? Apostrophe “ ’ ” is used instead of “of” e.g. New York’s Senator Hillary Clinton (Time) d. of-phrase in substitution of clause e.g. Even the Soviet Union recently permitted mention in its press of a 15-year-old boy hammer-killing of an old woman in Moscow.
