On the whole, they are deep in meaning and rich in rhyme. Moreover, they are not only the carriers of intelligence and wisdom of the people but also the reflections of the languages and arts. From the perspective of their content, idioms are all the combined wisdom of peoples, distilled from centuries of experience of dealing with the problems and difficulties of life. Since man and animals are closely related to each other, languages of all nations contain a lot of animal idioms, and so do Chinese and English. Along with the development and process of human society, people associate their feelings and emotions, even social events and natural phenomena, with various animals, which are thought to represent different characters of people, or serve as omens. Many animals have become a kind of symbolism in people’s thinking, and this symbolism is reflected in the language. Sayings like?“as cunning as the fox”,?“as busy as a bee”,?“as stupid as a pig” appear both in Chinese and English. However, because of the different historical and cultural settings, the connotations of animal words in one language do not always coincide with those in another. Sometimes people may use different animal words to express the same feeling or figurative meanings. While on some occasions people may give different figurative or connotative meanings to the same animal words. These metaphorical phrases of animals are yielded from certain cultural settings, and the pragmatic meanings which they reflect depend on the understanding of the cultures of Chinese and English.? ???? The study of idioms has been proceeding well since the 1970s in China, and Chen Wenbo, Yang Zijian are viewed as the forerunners in this field.
