Lecture 8 Media in the UK Mass media Forms of communication designed to reach a vast audience without any personal contact between the senders and receivers. Examples would include newspapers, magazines, radio and television. Broadcasting: TV and radio The Press—Newspapers and magazines The past 8 decades have seen TV radio broadcasting develop into the most influential medium through which people get their news entertainment. Major Broadcasting companies /channels in UK Public ownership: e.g. BBC Private ownership: e.g. ITV British Broadcasting Corporation (radio service began in 1926, and TV service 1936, by far the largest producer of television in the UK.) 2 national TV channels--BBC1 and BBC2 5 national radio services-- BBC Radio1,2,3,4,5 BBC World Service radio TV The BBC’s domestic radio and TV services are mainly financed by the license fee (all owners of television sets in the UK are required to buy an annual license). So people in the UK don’t have to worry about commercial ads on the two channels Private ownership ITV: Independent Television Companies, funded by advertising revenue, regulated by ITC (Independent Television Commission) Soap opera The most popular type of TV programs amongst the general public is the soap opera. The story line in these daily or weekly series are often of a moral nature, for example should a husband be faithful to his wife, or should a young girl have an abortion. Some tackle serious social problems such as unemployment and rape. Sitcom Situation comedy programs do very similar things to those in soaps. The difference between is that soap opera is drama while sitcom is comedy. But there is no clear-cut division. Questions 1. Does the British government have any control over the broadcasting content? Traditionally, government has played a major role in regulating their output. Overt political involvement is not acceptable.
