AbstractWriting is often regarded as the most difficult skills to master, which is much difficult for learners to complete. Though many approaches have been applied to teach English major?s writing, and students have accumulated an amount of knowledge about English vocabulary and grammar. Writing is still a weakness for most English majors.In recent years, the importance of prefabricated chunks in second language acquisition has gained researchers? more and more attention. Prefabricated chunks are “a string of coherent or incoherent words or other meaningful units which are ready-made and stored in the memory” (Wray, 2002, p.132). In short, prefabricated chunks, which can be stored as a whole in learners? memory, have features of both vocabulary and grammar, and chunks is the foundation of internalized knowledge. Therefore, this study aims to apply prefabricated chunks theory into the English writing.60 sophomore English majors form Shenyang Normal University were selected as the subject for the four month study. The research participants would be divided into experiment class and control class. The traditional method was applied in the control writing class. In the four months teaching process, the teacher instructed with the prefabricated chunks in writing in the experimental class. Two tests, and interviews were the research instruments. All the results were analyzed by SPSS 16.0. The study explored two issues: Whether the use of prefabricated chunks improve English majors? writing; the students? attitudes towards the use of prefabricatedchunks in the writing after the experiment? The results of the thesis confirmed that the prefabricated chunks approach in English writing was effective. The participants in the experimental class got higher scores than the control class and they became more confident and interested in English writing.Key words: prefabricated chunks, English writing, English majors? empirical study摘 要在外语学习的基本技能中,写作是最难被掌握的,同时对于大多数学习者 来说是比较难
