What You Can and Can’t Expect This is a moral philosophy class. That is, it engages in presenting and evaluating moral positions and arguments for them. In particular, we try to figure out how we should deal with several contemporary social and moral problems. The problems are as follows: capital punishment, near and distant poverty, violence, suicide, euthanasia, abortion, and treatment of animals and natural environment. Continued This class fulfills the University’s second writing requirement. So it requires a large amount of written work. Because you have passed the first writing requirement, the instructor presupposes your grammar and diction are OK. The class rather focuses on three advanced skills of writing: (1) analytical understanding of materials; (2) critical thinking; and (3) clear exposition of your views and arguments for them. But remember that bad grammar and diction prevent (3). Assignments are given and graded for philosophical content and for these three skills. The instructor occasionally talks about how to interpret and analyze reading materials, what argument is good or fallacious, and how to achieve clarity. The Required Textbook and How to Make Copies of Other Readings The Required textbook is: Matters of Life and Death: New Introductory Essays in Moral Philosophy Third Edition edited by Tom Regan, McGrow-Hill, Inc., 1993. You need to make copies of other readings in either of the follo
