Simple alcohols are named in the IUPAC system as derivatives of the parent alkane, using the suffix -ol. For example, the molecular weights of 1-propanol (mol wt =60 amu), butane (mol wt = 58 amu), and chloroethane (mol wt = 65 amu), are similar but 1-propanol boils at 97.4℃, compared with -0.5℃ for the alkane and 12.3 ℃ for the chloroalkane.
