Nursing Process 2 - Mediabistro jobs, classes, community and 护理法2类,社区与mediabistro工作,
The Deliberative Nursing Process, also known as Nursing Process Theory, originated with Jean Orlando’s theory in 1961. Orlando studied over 2,000 interactions between nurses and patients and found trends between effective and non-effective nursing. She deemed these as “good” and “bad” nursing (Peterson, 2004). At this time, she was considered a grand theorist, but her theory was testable and ahead of its time. The theory’s goal was to meet the patient’s immediate need. Her theory was influenced by Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relations. The theory was published in 1952, and Orlando began her to formulate her theory in 1954 (Meleis, 2007). Peplau described nursing as relationships between a person in need of help and the nurse who is able to recognize that need (Meleis, 2007).
Orlando continued to develop her theory over the years, and through collaboration of other theorists and scholars the Deliberative Nursing Process theory evolved. The main concepts of Deliberative Nursing Process are defined as “means by which the professional nurse purposefully explores with the patient the nurse’s perception (stimulation of any one of the five senses), thoughts and/or feelings related to the patient’s immediate need for help” (Peterson, 2004, 302). This basically means the nurse must talk and actively listen to the patient as well as look for nonverbal cues that the patient needs help.
Once the need is identified, the nurse must ascertain if she can respond to the need effectively. If she can, a nursing action is implemented. The nurse then evaluates the nursing action and validates whether the nursing action met the patient’s needs. The validation can occur with verbal or nonverbal communication. For example, a vented patient has decrease oxygen saturation and the nurse identifies this immediate need. The settings are then adjusted (the nursing action) and the patient’s O2 sats begin to increase. The increase in oxygen levels validates that the nurse action was approp
