ABSTRACTAsanimportantparameterintheforeignlanguagepedagogy,mediumlanguageiswidelyusedinteachingprocess.Itmainlycontainsthemothertongueandthetargetlanguage.Nowacontroversialissueintheforeignlanguageteachingisthatwhichkindoflanguagecanbeusedasthemediumlanguage.Inthepasttwodecades,becauseofthethoughtthatthemothertonguemakesanegativeinfluenceontheforeignlanguagelearning,limitingtheuseofthemothertonguehasbeeninvogue.However,asamatteroffact,theoutcomesofEnglishteachinginthemiddleschoolarenotassatisfiedasexpected,sohowtousethemediumlanguageappropriatelyisstillanobjectiveofresearch.ThisstudyaimstoexplorethedistributionalpatternsofL1andL2inEFLclassroomandtheinfluencingfactorsinlanguagechoosing.Thedataofthestudyarefromthreeaspects,includingclassroomobservation,interviewsandquestionnaires,amongwhichtheclassroomobservationservesasthemainsourceofdata.Thefindingsofthestudyfallintothefollowingaspects.First,influencedbymanyinteractivefactors,L1isstillusedbyteachersinEFLclassrooms.Second,moststudentsandteachersapproveofthejudicioususeofL1,becauseitcouldhelpthestudentslearnL2well.Third,teachersmainlyuseL1toexploregrammarpointsandtranslation.Basedontheanalysisofthedata,thisstudyconcludesthatL1playsacomplementaryandfacilitativeroleinEFLclassrooms,soteachersshouldtakemanyaspectsintoaccountinchoosingtheteachinglanguage,includingtheneedofstudents,teachingenvironment,andthecapabilityofteachers.Somepedagogicalimplicationsofthestudyarefinallyprovidedattheendofthestudy.Keywords:L1;L2;distributionalpatterns;influencingfactors.i摘要教学媒介语是教师进行课堂教学所使用的语言,是外语教学法的一个重要参数。教学媒介语主要包括母语和目标语。外语教学界对应使用何种语言作为教学媒介语持有不同的观点。近二十年来的趋势是主张母语应该不用或尽可能少用。但事实上,仅用英语作为教学媒介语的英语课堂教学效果却不如预期的那样令人满意。尤其是在中学英语教学中,仅仅使用英语授课是否可行,是否真正利于学生的英语学习呢?鉴于此,本论文拟就中国中学外语课堂上母语的使用情况进行研究。主要研究问题包括:教师在外语课堂上使用母语和目标语的比例及语言选择的影响因素。该调查的数据来源为课堂观察,访谈和问卷,其中课堂观察为主要手段。分析后发现:受各种因素的影响,老师们在中学外语课堂上仍使用汉语;绝大多数老师和学生赞成适当地使用母语。但老师在实际教学中使用母语的程度不一;英语课堂上教师使用母语主要是在讲解语法和复杂的语言形式时,翻译中也涉及母语的频繁使用。基于这样的结果和发现,可以看出母语在外语课堂上可以起到补充性,促进性的作用。尤其是在讲解语法点时,母语使用是有帮助性的,也是一种为学生和老师所接受的教学策略
